Nuclear Shelter

| Inspired by the instruction films issued by the British government to prepare the population in the event of a nuclear war, I have constructed an absurd, non-functional nuclear bunker from the materials suggested. Along with the structure there was a video that combined the sound of the instruction films with found footage. |

| Inspiriert von den Lehrfilmen, die die Britische Regierung in den 70er Jahren in Auftrag gab, um die Bevölkerung auf einen eventuellen nuklearen Kriege vorzubereiten, habe ich aus den angegebenen Materialien einen absurden, nicht funktionierenden Nuklearbunker gebaut. Zusätzlich zum Bunker gab es ein Video, das den Ton aus diesen Filmen mit Found Footage zusammenbrachte. |

Airtight

Based on the fictional premise that the atmosphere has been poisoned after a disaster, I built a protective shelter in an empty shopfront in the city centre of Pecs, Hungary. Hidden behind layers of plastic sheeting, a lean-to was constructed from simple DIY store materials. This shelter acted as a film set for my daily filming sessions. With a webcam I recorded everyday activities such as fetching and filtering water, eating, writing a diary or reading.
A screen in the covered window space showed these recordings 24 hours a day. Filmed in CCTV-style, the footage seemed to show a private inside space, displayed in a public, outside space. However, the video was carefully edited to give that illusion and was indeed a looped 5min recording. Not noticable to the average passer-by, an attentive viewer was able to notice the constructed nature of this fictional "reality". |

Ausgehend von der fiktiven Annahme, dass die Atmosphäre nach einer Katastrophe vergiftet ist, habe ich mir einen Schutzraum in einem leerstehenden Ladenlokal im Stadtzentrum von Pecs in Südungarn gebaut. Versteckt hinter Lagen von Plastikfolie ist so aus einfachen Baumarktmaterialien eine Hütte entstanden, in der ich mich selbst beim Ausführen gewisser Alltagsaktivitäten wie Wasserholen und -filtern, Nahrungsaufnahme, Tagebuchschreiben oder Lesen gefilmt habe.
Auf einem Screen im verhängten Fenster waren diese Aufnahmen dann 24 Stunden am Tag zu sehen. Mit einer Webcam im Stil von Überwachungskameras gefilmt, vermittelten die Aufnahmen den Eindruck von CCTV im Innenraum, von einer Live-Übertragung vom privaten Innenraum in den öffentlichen Außenraum. In Wirklichkeit waren die Aufnahmen jedoch sorgfältig geschnitten, um diesen Eindruck zu erzeugen, wiederholten sich jedoch nach 5 Minuten, so dass ein aufmerksamer Beobachter dieses auch bemerken konnte.

| This installation is assembled from various found objects, combined with bought velvet and a big oil painting of a volcano eruption that portraits a cataclysmic event, possibly but not necessarily the one that led to the situation in which the shelter was constructed. The painting itself is reverently illuminated like an altar and acts as the meta-narrative for this reality. |

| Nach einer Katastrophe hat ein Mensch sich ein neues Leben gebaut: eine Hütte komplett mit Dekorationen, Belüftung und Beleuchtung, sowie einem Ölgemälde, das einem Altar gleich aufgebaut, als Hintergrund einen möglichen Entstehungsmythos dieser neuen Welt darstellt. |
