The Last Night
Photograph, Quote, Oil on Paper, DV Video, 2011At 21:50 the doctor measured blood pressure, body temperature and puls. Everything was normal. Blood pressure 115 over 75, temperature 36,7 and puls 64.
"You have to sleep now", he said.
"Sleep?.... Certainly", I replied obediently and went to bed.... After about 7 minutes I had fallen asleep.Yuri Gagarin supposedly slept deeply and soundly the last night before his historic first flight into space. Truth? Soviet ideology? The narrative requirements of a heroic story?
During my reserach into Yuri Gagarin in libraries and on the internet I came across a photo of the room Yuri spent this last night. Based on this, I rebuilt the room in my studio as best as I could.
Coming partly from a fictional and partly from a documentary angle, I approached the night through the rebuilt room. Next to the video there is a piece of paper with the quote on it as well as a print of the photograph of the real room. The portrait of Yuri can also be seen in the video and therefore acts as a clue to its fictional nature.Die letzte Nacht

In meiner Recherche in Bibliotheken und dem Internet zu Juri Gagarin bin ich über mehrere Zitate zu seiner letzten Nacht vor dem Flug gestolpert, die meine ungläubige Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gezogen haben. Ein Mensch bricht am nächsten Tag ins völlig Ungewisse auf - kein Mensch war vor ihm im All - und ist sich der Unsicherheit seines Überlebens vollkommen bewusst. Dennoch schläft er – gehorsam – tief und fest.
Etwas daran lässt mich nicht mehr los. Ausgehend von dem gefundenen Foto des Schlafraumes, habe ich diesen im Atelier so realitätsgetreu wie möglich nachgebaut.
Teils dokumentarisch, teils fiktiv nächere ich mich nun dieser Nacht über den Raum an: neben dem Video, dass den nachgebauten Raum abfilmt, hängt ein Blatt Papier mit dem oben angeführten Zitat sowie dem ausgedruckten Foto vom Raum. Dazu kommt noch ein Ölportrait Juris, das als Dekoration im Video vorkommt und als reales Überbleibsel mit ausgestellt wird.
